BENEFITING: Friends of the World Food Program
Famine in Lesotho: Many rural families whose livelihood depends on rain-fed subsistence farming are worried about the El Niño-induced drought. There are currently 180,000 people affected in Lesotho by the 2014/15 drought and in need of food assistance through April 2016. WFP and the government are aware of the impact prolonged drought would have here. In Lesotho, which has the second highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world (23 percent), high unemployment (25 percent), high prices of imported food, and high stunting among children (33 percent), the outcome could be disastrous. To prepare for the current drought, the Disaster Management Authourity and other stakeholders have recommended the activation of the first phase of a multi-hazard contingency plan. A US$ 18million budget was proposed to facilitate the implementation of a Drought Mitigation and Preparedness Plan. In response to to the food shortage, WFP has intensified its fundraising activities with a view to rolling out food and cash assistance programmes in the most affected areas. Let's not let these children starve!
