In Memory of Jack R. Murphy

                March 16, 1918 - November  11, 2013

We are raising money for the Wounded Warriors in the name of my Dad, Lieutenant Jack R. Murphy, retired U.S. Navy and WWII veteran.  We are hoping to make this an annual tradition at Christmas time.

Those of you who knew Pa know how very proud he was of his service to our Country.  In fact, it was all he talked about in his later years sometimes much to Mom's chagrin as she heard the stories over and over again.  But he should have been proud.

Dad was inducted into the U.S. Navy September 8, 1942.  He was made a junior officer and assigned to a minesweeper, the YMS 134, based in Attu, Alaska, during the Aleutian campaign when Kiska and Attu were taken by the U.S.  In 1943 he was assinged as skipper on the YMS 359 and promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade.  The youngest skipper at the time.  His ship was on the picket line getting shot at during the Normandy landings and was the first under fire during the invasion of Southern France, August 15, 1944 for which he was awarded a Commendation Ribbon for his "exceptional ability, prompt and decisive action and outstanding devotion to duty."  He was promoted to Lieutenant in January of 1945. After the atomic bomb was dropped, his was one of the first ships to enter the Nagasaki Harbor.  His ship also led the Missouri into Tokyo Bay for the treaty signing.  He received an honorable discharge from the Navy on January 19, 1946.  All of this before the age of 30!

It is fitting that Dad died peacefully at the age of 95 on Novemer 11, 2013--Veteran's Day.  I think he would have been proud of that.  He would also be proud of his family and friends for remembering our nation's injured servicemen and women who, like Dad, sacrificed so much of themselves in the name of freedom.
