On Monday, April 15, 2013, I’ll run the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon for Wake Up Narcolepsy (WUN) and for the millions worldwide living with narcolepsy, including my15-year-old son.
Five years ago this spring, he was diagnosed with narcolepsy and cataplexy, a sleep/wake neurological disorder. He has the classic case of narcolepsy: his symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. I have three children, who I love dearly and would do anything for. So committing to run the Boston Marathon for WUN is something I want to do, something I’m compelled to do.
Training and running the Marathon will push me beyond any sort of comfort zone I have, but if this gesture can help improve my son’s life, then I’m excited for the challenge. I watch my son struggle with narcolepsy and realize no matter how challenging a single marathon will be, it’s nothing compared with the challenges he faces each and every day. Like every other part of his life, he is facing this devastating condition with grace and maturity, an outlook that I consider heroic.
The funds I raise through my Boston Marathon efforts will be donated to support narcolepsy research. I’ve set a personal fundraising goal of $26,200, a thousand for every mile of the marathon.
Thank you for your support and interest!
