Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page! I am running the Boston Marathon 2013 toward finding a cure for narcolepsy.
I am a 52-year-old neuroscientist. My main research focus is sleep-disordered breathing, and through this work I have become familiar with the brain mechanisms that control when we sleep and wake. This is a very complicated system, and although we have only begun to scratch the surface of understanding, many exciting aspects have been uncovered. Interestingly, the study of certain disorders, such as narcolepsy, which can occur in animals as well as people, has helped to guide our research. And in turn experimental results can help to guide treatment of patients.
I have decided to run this marathon and tackle fundraising not only to help generate some desperately needed dollars for research, but also to raise awareness of the cyclical relationship between scientific work and treatment of patients. It is a two-way street, and we all need to be reminded that patients are the reason we as scientists go to work every day.
I have run a few marathons before, but recently I have told myself, “I am too old” and “It’s too hard.” But that’s not a good attitude. To be honest, I haven’t even been running that much lately. But I have decided to focus more on what I “can” do rather than what I can’t -- or think I can’t. So here we go, and I look forward to a great adventure. Please join me with a donation or even just in spirit!
Thank you for your support. Every donation is greatly appreciated!
