November 2009, Troy, my husband, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. After 16 months of struggling to find a cure, we lost our battle.
Before Troy died, he wrote me a letter and placed it inside a card. He signed it; LIVE HUGE, Troy.
Since reading that letter, Live Huge has become my mantra. To honor Troy and this sentiment, I decided to do a tour around the country with our 8-year-old daughter to introduce her to the people and places that meant something to her Dad.
Unfortunately, I had to wait a year, because during Troy’s illness I suffered an injury that turned into osteoarthritis in my hip. Thus three months after his death, I underwent a hip resurface surgery.
After traveling around the country, eating whatever I wanted and sitting on trains, planes and automobiles, I gained over 20 pounds. My plan has always been that after the tour, (approximately one year after my surgery) I would do something outdoors to get back into shape and to commemorate my healing both physically and emotionally.
Today as I hiked in remembrance of Troy on what would have been our 19th wedding anniversary (9/5/12), I decided to continue my Live Huge journey by celebrating what would have been Troy’s 50th year by doing 50 hikes in 50 days.
Kids Konnected is a group dedicated to supporting kids who have a parent with cancer or who has died from cancer by supporting the whole family. Donations to Kids Konnected are accepted through United Way of Jackson County.
Will you support this Widow’s walk of 50 hikes in 50 days and help Kids in need in our community move through this heartbreaking time?
