A few years ago, I read “The End of Poverty” by Professor Jeffrey Sachs and was deeply moved. I read about the devastating conditions experienced by those living in extreme poverty, but I also read about the attainable possibility of ending poverty within our lifetime.
So when Professor Sachs invited me to join his team in Africa to see their work firsthand, I jumped at the chance. For the first time, I saw what it’s like to live on less than a dollar a day. I didn’t grow up with a lot in my hometown of Springfield, OH - and my family struggled at times - but it was the first time I had witnessed that kind of poverty. And I simply couldn’t accept that as the way it had to be. I had to do something.
That experience inspired me to start the Show Me Campaign, an organization whose mission is to break the cycle of poverty through solutions that have been proven to improve people’s lives and to give them the opportunities to survive, thrive and succeed. What does that mean exactly? In the United States, it means we work to ensure that every child has access to a great education – an education that puts them on the path to success. In Africa, we’ve worked to provide clean water, health care, education and other basic tools that break the cycle of poverty.
Join me in the fight to end poverty at home and abroad. With your support, we can make poverty a thing of the past!
