Help Princeton students sponsor a Syrian refugee student!

As the Syrian conflict drags into its fifth year, Syrian refugee youth are calling for attention to their need for higher education. In pre-war Syria, nearly 30% of the youth were attending university. Now, only 5% of the over 400,000 Syrian refugees who fled their country are accessing higher education.

Without higher education, who will be the future doctors, teachers, engineers, and politicians rebuilding a safe and peaceful Syria?

A four-year university scholarship for a Syrian refugee to attend university in Jordan costs only $19,000. That’s less than $5,000 a year!

The Problem:

Za’atari Refugee Camp, Jordan is home to over 80,000 Syrian refugees – over 12% of whom are youth, ages 18-24. Before war forced them from their homes, many of these youth, like their peers internationally, were university students, ranging from aspiring high school graduates to first year Nursing majors learning critical skills to fourth year Education majors ready to chart their professional futures.

Yet in Za’atari Camp, these youth are unable to continue their higher education, as formal education is offered only until 12th grade in the camp and local universities are prohibitively expensive.

Youth feel their lives stunted and futures put on hold by war. Many have now been in the camp for four years – enough time to complete a full undergraduate degree – without any educational opportunities. This creates individual frustration with ripple social effects. The potential of youth is not utilized in the present and lost for the future.

The Response:

The Amal Scholarship Fund will support Syrian youth leaders in Za’atari to attend a nearby Jordanian university while remaining camp residents and community leaders.

In addition to pursuing university studies, recipients will continue their participation in civic engagement through a program of cultural exchange with the Woodrow Wilson community, promoting mutual exchange between both communities.

The fund will target Syrian youth leaders with superior academic records and demonstrated commitment to making a difference in their Za’atari community and rebuilding Syria after returning home.

The Need:

Help us send a new fellow Princetonian — a Syrian refugee student — to continue their education in Jordan!

Princeton students plan to fundraise $10,000 through a Spring Series of events - enough to support 2 years of a university degree for a Syrian refugee student.

We also seek partners to provide matching funds of $10,000 to support the final 2 years of the scholarship.

By sponsoring a Syrian student, we will help one of our fellow students in need to continue his/her education. In return, this Syrian student will join the larger "Princeton community," and participate in virtual cultural exchange activities to connect with Princeton students.

Will you join us investing in the next generation of leaders?
