BENEFITING: Outreach International
EVENT DATE: Jul 29, 2012
Running to end poverty one child, one family, one village at a time. I am raising funds to support of the work of Outreach International.
A few years ago, a dear friend of mine, Debi Hale, was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a scary time for her family and friends. In the months following the diagnosis, we supported her through many life- changing events.
One event that brought many of her friends together for the first time was theKomen Race for the Cure. It was during this race, watching my survivor friend Debi proudly walking along side her husband and daughter, that I realized the power of raising funds through running.
Whether you are a friend who can’t stop laughing at the idea of me waddling across the finish line, a fellow minister who preaches the passion which Christ had for the cause of the poor, an athlete who understands the sacrifice that one must make to train for a marathon, a traveler who has witnessed firsthand the devastation and degradation of human life through the conditions of poverty, or a web-surfer who arrived on this shore by accident, I invite you and challenge you to respond to the plight of the poor.
I do beleive we can end poverty in our lifetime. Visit my blog, www.run4liferun4love.org, which gives you updates on my pathetic attempts to train for these races, relates my stream-of-consciousness thinking during the training run, and sometimes provides factual informaiton on the issues relating to poverty.
I also invite you to run (well, at least move a little faster than a walk) with me. Think you are too old? I'm older 'n dirt--just ask my grandkids. Think you are too slow? A semi-trailer with 18 flat tires goes faster than I do! Think you are "weight-challenged?" I'm so fat, cars pull over to make way for me on the pavement1 (although i recently lost 50 lbs.! Yea! --I'm scared to death all 50 will return the next time I sit down!) Can't find the time? I'll call you at 4:00 a.m. and we'll run to Dunkin' Donuts together! (it's the only reason you'll ever find me up at 4:00 a.m.) Knees giving out? Back hurts? I feel your pain. I sometimes wear two knees braces and take four Tylenol before heading out the door. So... no excuses! My motto: If you are moving forward, you are in the race!
