XDA Serves Cusco, Peru With MEDLIFE
Organized by: Chi Delta Alpha
Chi Delta Alpha is Virginia Tech's only all-female service organization. The sorority contributes to the New River Valley through numerous service efforts with various organizations. Members are required to complete at least 32 hours of service per semester. In addition to volunteering in the community throughout the year, Chi Delta Alpha takes a week long service trip each year. In January of 2015 they plan to travel to Cusco, Peru to work with MEDLIFE.
The largely indigenous population of Cusco, Peru and many its surrounding communities continue to live in extreme poverty. In the rural mountainside pueblos, roads are often unpaved and unsafe, schools are stocked with only the most basic teaching supplies, and the nearest hospital may be up to two hours away by car. Residents of Cusco and its surrounding territory strongly identify with the indigenous Quechua culture, and the economy relies heavily on agriculture. Heavy rains and earthquakes frequently produce further hardships, as evidenced by the January 2010 flooding, which wiped out roads, utility grids, and structures alike. Not spared from the destruction were many of the area's few medical clinics.
MEDLIFE believes that in order to improve the overall health and welfare of families and communities in need, a comprehensive approach is needed. With this goal in mind, MEDLIFE seeks to deliver aid through three broad avenues: Medicine, Education, and Development. MEDLIFE divides donations into two funds, the MEDLIFE Fund, which dedicates 100% of every donation toward building sustainable development projects for poor communities, and the Mission Fund which is the broadest kind of giving to MEDLIFE and helps MEDLIFE accomplish its overall mission by funding logistical and operational expenses.
As an organization we've never been out of the country for our service trip, so this is going to be a big step for us. We have a goal of taking around 25 members with the estimated cost of the trip being $1,700 per person (including airfare.) We are planning to fundraise to supplement payment for this trip and raise awareness of the issues we will be tackling. Please help support our mission by donating or just sharing the link!
