THE STORY:

A Charity Mountain Bike Ride for the Northern Nevada Childrens Cancer Foundation August 31st - September 10th Great Basin National Park to Reno,NV 530 miles 11 days 12 Mountain Ranges Alone Welcome to the Cross Nevada Mountain Bike Ride. My name is Jason Susslin. In 1993 I started planning a mountain bike ride across the state, but my wife and I had three daughters to raise so the idea was put on hold for a while. In 2004 my brother Dan (45) lost his eleven year battle with Cancer. The loss of my brother changed my life. The ride turned from a personal goal into a fund raising event. The kids grew up, and in September 2008 after 15 years of waiting the ride was on. I was supported by a truck driven by my friend Josh (and Corey). We camped our way across Nevada - from Genoa to Baker, NV. Ten(10) days of riding, 12 mountain ranges, 36,000'+ of climbing, one flipped truck, and 500 miles - the ride was completed. We became the first to mountain bike across Nevada! It was established that the route was going to work so I have made a promise to myself (and Dan) to complete the ride every other year - for as long as my legs hold up. This year will mark my fourth time mountain biking across Nevada, but unlike the past I will be riding without support, and alone. There aren't adequate words to describe what it is like to mountain bike this route. It cuts through the heart of the Great Basin. Which is a premier area for mountain bike touring, and bikecamping. I'll bike through a mountain range every day, and sometimes two. I start in a National Park, bike by 10 Wilderness areas, camp in Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, and soak in hot springs along the way. Nevada is the only state in the country that you can string together this many dirt roads, and this many mountain ranges - thanks to all the Public Land. It is an isolated route with only a few small communities in 500 miles of biking. If you want one of the most unique mountain biking experiences of your life come join me. Preferably as a fund raising participant, but if you want to jump in for a day all are welcome. I'm fundraising for the Northern Nevada Childrens Cancer Foundation in Reno. NNCCF is the regions only organization dedicated solely to childhood cancer. Please go to the NNCCF at top of page to learn more about this incredible organization. Also use the information in this website to organize your own adventure. E-mail me for any advice I'm glad to share what I've learned. The long term goal of this event is to raise money to help Cancer patients ( their families), and introduce as many mountain bikers as possible to the vast beauty of the Great Basin of Nevada.
