We need your help this month to send 10 young adults from Red Hook, Brooklyn to the Allied Media Conference in Detroit!
A bit about RHI and DS: Red Hook Initiative (RHI) is a nonprofit serving youth and community members in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The majority of our participants are residents of the NYCHA Red Hook Houses, Brooklyn's largest public housing development. RHI Digital Stewards (DS) is a year-long paid training program where young adults age 18-24 learn technology skills and media production, with the goal of securing a permanent tech job.
Why the trip matters: Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the DS have attended the Allied Media Conference (AMC) in Detroit for three consecutive years. Each year, these young adults return to Red Hook inspired to continue their work. After the conference, we see a clear shift in their approach to the work -- they begin to see themselves as technologists, activists and leaders. They return to their training in Red Hook with new urgency and purpose, as well as a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.
The Digital Stewards will have the opportunity to work with like-minded groups around the issues of internet access, adoption, security and inclusion of technologies. A thoughtful emphasis will be placed on activating the technology sector’s approach to creating dialogue and solutions revolving around issues of race, class and gender.
How your money is spent: RHI will cover transportation, food and conference fees for our group of 10 Digital Stewards and two adult staff from RHI. The two-day conference occurs on the campus of Wayne State University, and attendees stay in the University dorms, giving young adults the opportunity to feel the excitement and possibility of a college campus.
Donate now: No amount is too small, and all donations are tax-deductible. RHI is a registered 501(c)3. 100% of those going on the trip are contributing what they can for their attendance. We are asking for donations in April so we can make arrangements for the conference that takes place in June.
Will you support Red Hook youth by contributing to this campaign?
