EVENT DATE: May 04, 2013
The YakTrek team was started at least 10 years ago to provide more opportunities for friends and co-workers at Life Technologies to run in this fun event and help raise money for Organs 'R' Us organization. The original Yak team name comes from the fact that Yaks are milked three times a day much like our three legs of the race. We chose YakTrek to stay with the same theme for the second Life Technologies team.
I had only started running with Johan (retired team captain), Danwei, and Meng for a couple of years when they invited me to join the YakTrek team in 2009 to run the 200 mile race at that time. I thought it was a great opportunity to spend some quality time together (as if we did not already do that at work) running in this fun event through very beautiful parts of the Bay Area from Calistoga to Santa Cruz. I have been hooked every since and look forward to it every year, like most of you, to have a chance to catch up with current friends and make new ones. Every year I ran different legs of the race and it is always an exciting and memorable event. I found the team work and friendships created while we were grouped in one van for 27+ hours one weekend each year to be exceptional and lasting. The minute I finish one Relay race I am already looking forward to next year.
We will be running 194 miles this year through 36 cities and across the beautiful moonlit Golden Gate Bridge around 1:00am Sunday morning, May 5th. During the Golden Gate Relay, known as California’s Longest Party, we will be passing a bracelet to the next team member, symbolizing the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient. At some point in time, we may have encountered friends, relatives, or co-workers who know someone who has been a recipient of an organ donation and how much that meant to the recipient to be given a second chance in life. This year’s Relay race is dedicated to Katie Grace Groebner who needs a new heart and lungs.
This is our way to help give another person a second opportunity through this great organization. We have a team goal of raising $600, but any amount will be very much appreciated. You can donate online, which is easiest and quickest to process, or send a check payable to Organs R US, 570 El Camino Real, Suite 150-330, Redwood City, CA 94063. Please write YakTrek on the bottom of your check. Thank you for your time and interest in our YakTrek team and in the Relay event.
