A group of Yalies and I are raising funds for a local nonprofit organization called the Fair Haven Community Health Center. It’s an incredible organization that provides comprehensive primary care services at low- or no-cost. Specifically, we will be raising funds for their school-based health centers. These operate in five New Haven schools and staff a nurse practitioner, office manager, and clinical social worker onsite so that students can be seen by a clinician for their primary healthcare needs right at school. Primary care is essential ensure that students are healthy enough to succeed in the classroom and beyond. This is of particular importance in New Haven schools, where many students come from low-income households and may not receive primary health services otherwise. The school-based health centers currently run at a deficit of $100,000, and Team U hopes to help the Fair Haven Community Health Center reduce that.
