BENEFITING: UNICEF USA
CAMPAIGN UPDATE 3/27/2014
After less than two days, we've already raised $2,117.00! That's amazing! Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far. However, since I pledged to keep the campaign open for 22 days until April 16th, this means that there is plenty of time to raise a lot more money. As of now, the new fundraising goal is $3000.00! Please keep sharing my birthday campaign for UNICEF's efforts in Syria and donate $22 today. Thanks :)
On April 7th, I will be turning 22 years old. Not quite sure how or when this happened but apparently it’s happening, and soon. Regardless, I’m pretty psyched because the past year has been incredible and I am confident this upcoming year will be even better.
As a senior at Stanford, I am so grateful for the countless opportunities I have had. One of these opportunities allowed me to study abroad in Amman, Jordan during the fall of 2012. During this time, I also volunteered at the Zaatari Refugee Camp near the Syrian border as the campus campaign chair of Syria Deeply. I interviewed— and even became friends with—several families who were forced to flee Syria in an attempt to protect their children. They shared their personal stories with me, and I witnessed the terrible conditions at the camp first-hand.
Needless to say, this experience changed my life. By January 2013, it was clear that the overwhelming need of the refugees in the camp was more permanent housing, otherwise known as caravans. From there, I spearheaded Caravan Aid— a nation-wide student campaign that ultimately raised nearly $12,000 for the UNHCR. Caravan Aid was recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative University.
Unfortunately, more than a year later, there is still no end in sight for the violence in Syria. Over 140,000+ men, women, and children have been killed, to the point where the UN has stopped keeping track. 6 million have been displaced from their homes. The situation is, in one word, disgusting.
Meanwhile, there is nothing else I could possibly ask for. I don’t want any presents for my birthday this year. What I do want, however, is to help the children who are suffering from this never-ending conflict. These kids have lost, literally, everything, and they need all the help they can get.
That’s why I am asking for my age in dollars (22!) from everyone I know. Ultimately, the goal is to raise $2200 that will go directly towards UNICEF's Syria efforts. Every dollar of the money raised will go to the organization, which is one of the most active organizations working both inside and outside of Syria. The campaign starts tonight and will be open for the next 22 days until April 22nd. Pretty please help me reach my goal and donate today.
