Surviving, Thriving and Launching an Organic Adventure!

We are five Cassidy sisters— Marci, Brandi, Beth, Kelly, and Amy (ages 47-58) — originally from Somerset County, Pa. Each of us has an individual breast cancer-related story. We are blessed to be looking beyond cancer armed with the knowledge that life offers no guarantees. The experience of our family’s cancer journey has sparked our desire to go further, do more, and live each moment to the fullest.

We are determined to take hold of what we can control and embrace the best and healthiest that life offers. So we are embarking on the Y Buy 9 Bike & Hike, June 14-20, 2015. Our seven-day bicycle ride and hike will traverse 411 miles (335 biking/76 miles hiking) on the Great Allegheny Passage trail and C&O Canal Towpath connecting Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

We're celebrating survival; honoring the life of our mother JoAnn Cassidy; and taking control of one area of life that effects overall well being — healthy eating. Our mantra is Active! Inspired! Organic!

Along the way we will promote Y BUY 9 our initiative to encourage people who want the best that life offers to consume fresh, organic foods. In the grocery store produce aisle, certified organic fruits and vegetables have the number “9” as the first digit of the number code on the label. This shows that the item was grown organically and is not genetically modified.

Understanding what “organic” means can help shoppers make informed choices. USDA certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors — soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives. Organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible.

Our effort will help raise funds for Rodale Institute's organic farming and education initiatives and other like-minded organizations.
