BENEFITING: United Way Silicon Valley
EVENT DATE: Aug 31, 2012
Hi! Smile if you can read this!!
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. Although, most of the people I encountered there spoke English, I couldn't help but to feel out of place when I could not read nor sound out the signs of streets, the museums, or just everyday ads.
I felt cut off unable to read, then I started reflecting on my volunteer experience as a reading mentor for two wonderful first grade students in one of the lowest income per capita neighborhoods in Silicon Valley. Those kids were learning the alphabet and sounds, and then slowly putting those sounds together to make words and eventually learning to read. I had a glimpse of what it's like to go about not knowing how to read and seeing signs just like foreign symbols put together. It's a very chaotic existence let me tell you!
The great news is that kids learn so fast, they are fearless and with a little personalized attention and dedication they improve. I saw it first hand, after eight short weeks of one-on-one reading sessions. ‘My kids’ were behind on their first grade words, not only were they able to catch up but also learned 2nd and some 3rd grade words. At the end of our reading program they were reading their favorite book to me! You could see the sense of accomplishment and pride in their smiling faces. It is said that kids who discover the love for reading go on to do well academically. Their chances to succeed become a reality.
I volunteer as a reading mentor with United Way, because I know that if one person can make an impact in a child’s life, What can’t we accomplish as a community that comes together?!
Thanks for letting me share with folks here. Please join me in making a donation to this great program. Thank You in advance for your generous contribution. $10, $20, or more goes a long way to mentor young readers.
Feel free to pass this along to your friends and family!
