BENEFITING: US Committee for UN Fund for Women, Inc.
Deborah Mayo wrote -I felt terribly ashamed when, last month, I learned that the U.S. was EIGHTH on the list of donor nations in support of United Nations Women, the arm of the United Nations that is charged globally with securing and advancing the human rights of women and their enjoyment of the fundamental freedoms that we women in America take for granted. Eighth, with a paltry $7,579,860 donated in FYE 2015, HALF what was donated by the tiny nation of Switzerland ($15,502,363) and barely a quarter of the donation by Norway, of all places, the No. 1 donor nation giving $26,775,735 in FYE 2015! But to feel shame about our nation's ranking was just part of my emotions. It was after I left the national board meeting of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women that it started registering, that the horror set in. What does it say about American values that we gave $350 million to the National Rifle Association in 2013 and only 2% of that amount to the empowerment and advancement of women in the United States and around the world? Would you support my small role in righting this wrong? Would you donate to my team in the upcoming 5K Run/Walk sponsored by the Miami Chapter/US National Committee for UN Women on Saturday, March 5th? Any donation....no matter how small.....would be so deeply appreciated. Please learn more about UN Women, its mission and its global effectiveness at: http://www.unwomen.org/en. I thank you in advance for being part of my team in support of women around the world.
