BENEFITING: GO Project Inc.
EVENT DATE: Jul 07, 2014
The GO Project (www.goprojectnyc.org) is a nonprofit organization addressing the educational needs of academically struggling, low-income public school students and their families in Lower Manhattan. The Young Leadership Council (YLC) is a group of young professionals committed to promoting and bringing awareness to the GO Project’s mission. Along with increasing the visibility of the GO Project, one of the goals for YLC members is to help the organization raise funds to support programming through special events.
One of these events is organizing a backpack drive in the spring. The goal for this first annual Backpack Drive is to provide 550 academically struggling students with fully-supplied backpacks at the start of GO Summer 2014. This will require that we raise $8,000! For this drive, the GO Project is partnering with High Water Women or HWW (http://www.highwaterwomen.org/), an organization that has been organizing backpack drives for almost ten years. Since beginning the drive in 2005, HWW has provided more than 53,200 area school children with new backpacks and school supplies. In 2013, HWW donated 10,200.
For many GO students, they do not have access to new supplies every school year. This drive will help make that possible this year. Your support will purchase backpacks and supplies for hundreds of children who are academically struggling (including students with a special education classification as a result of a Learning Disability, Speech/Language Impairment, or Emotional Disturbance) and living in poverty. This request is time-sensitive as HWW needs to begin ordering school supplies in mid-June. Supplies include backpacks, notebooks, folders, paper, markers, pens, pencils, pencil cases, dictionaries, scissors, erasers and more.
It costs about $20 for each backpack with supplies.
Backpacks for 50 children = $1,000
Backpacks for 25 children = $500
Backpacks for 12 children = $240
Backpacks for 5 children = $100
Backpack for 1 child = $20
On behalf of the entire GO Project, thank you for helping GO students receive a brand new filled backpack this summer!
