Why Summer Camp?
Summer Camp enrollment is growing every day at our "Up North" Camp Nissokone and Camp Ohiyesa in the farmlands of Holly, MI. These popular YMCA camps have been an important piece of many family's lives for close to 100 years and the Y has a reputation of never turning away a child because of the inability to pay the full cost.
In the tearful words of a Mother:
I was afraid that I was losing my daughter Nicole. Her sister had gone to college, her father and I had both been laid–off work and were struggling to make ends meet and Nicole didn’t seem to be herself. One day, she told me she was scared of being pressured to make the wrong decisions at school.
A friend had told me about Camp Nissokone and what a good impact it had on their son, so I decided to try call and see about sending Nicole to Camp. The YMCA generously enabled her to go for what we were able to pay.
Two weeks later when we returned to pick her up, I saw her running towards me yelling and screaming with a group of girls. I had to sit down, hold my breath and ask myself ‘was this the same person I dropped off two weeks ago?’ It was like she was a new person.
Before camp, my daughter was picked on and laughed at by others. I wish people would understand the power of camp. It changes kids. It changes parents as well. As a parent I do not have to worry as much about my daughter making poor choices. Camp was the right choice – it is much more than camp. In our case, Camp is a life changing reality.
Thank you so much.
