BENEFITING: YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit
Detroit Swims (TM) was started by the Y with the goal to ensure that all children in Detroit have the opportunity to learn to swim.
The Need: In the city of Detroit, 70% of children cannot swim, and are almost three times more likely to drown. Many low-income children do not own a swim suit, can’t afford swim lessons, and have never been in a swimming pool. No child should fear the water. $100 helps keep a child safe for life.
The Solution: The Y's Detroit Swims program is reaching out to schools and community pools to run our unique swim program. We elimanate every barrier that there is to learning to swim: we provide swim wear, towels, transportation, certified lifeguards and swim instructors, and all the encouragement a child needs to master a new skill.
The Goal: To annually raise $200,000 to teach 2,000 kids to swim and be safe around water. We've already taught almost 4,000 children to date - and your support will help us ensure that every single child in the City of Detroit has the opportunity to learn to swim!
