Here’s why I run and why I need your generous support…
In 2008, my world was flipped upside down when my mother received the terrible news that she had been diagnosed with Parkinson Disease. Immediately after the diagnosis she began researching and found that developing a physical exercise routine was imperative to slowing the progression of this disease.
For those of you that know my mother, you understand that developing an exercise routine was foreign territory for her. Finding time for exercise was limited with her full focus centered on family, friends and her career.
My mother turned to the Parkway Community Y and a dedicated personal trainer for help with this difficult fight. For the next couple of years, my mother battled the progression of this disease with the full encouragement of the Parkway Y staff and its adaptive programming for people with disabilities. For years, she was able to develop a healthy body, mind and spirit.
Now, why do I write all of this about my mother and her relationship with the Y? Two reasons:
1. The Parkway Y, unequivocally, slowed the progression of my mother’s disease and provided my family many more quality years with her.
2. There are millions and millions of dollars pouring in everyday for organizations committed to finding a cure to this brutal disease, which is fantastic! However, there isn’t enough money coming in for community organizations, like the Y, that support people already diagnosed and battling life threatening illnesses.
My family was fortunate enough that money was not a barrier for a Y membership or the cost of a personal trainer. The reality, however, is that money's a barrier for 1,376 Parkway Y members.
One of my mother’s favorite quotes to me was, “Do I ever let you down?” In the 26 years spent with her, she never did. Now it’s time to never let down the 1,376 Y members who rely on the Parkway Community Y and their financial assistance program to fight their fight. Thank you in advance for your generous support of a wonderful organization!
