BENEFITING: LOUIES KIDS INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 06, 2012
Yogis, and those like me, will take over Marion Square in Charleston, SC this Saturday to spend three hours on our mats performing nine rounds of the 12 Sun Salutation postures. Gracefully, and perhaps not so gracefully, we will be lead by nine different callers through a total of 108 poses for the 9th annual Whole Foods Market Yoga Marathon to benefit Louie's Kids.
Why 108? This figure has many meanings within the context of Eastern philosophy, where it is said the disciplines of yoga originated. Since we will be saluting the Sun, and if you insist on an interpretation --here you go: The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.
Louie’s Kids is a non-profit organization that helps treat childhood obesity.
"We find the fix that fits, one kid at a time. Founded in 2001 in Alexandria, Virginia and operated today out of Charleston, South Carolina, Louie’s Kids serves economically disadvantaged kids nationwide.”
“Statistics show that 89% of children who are overweight or obese will become obese adults. Overweight children face premature heart attacks and strokes, will need new hips and joints early in their adult lives, and obesity in adulthood likely will be more severe. Sadly, for the first time in our history, this generation of children will live shorter lives than their parents.”
