BENEFITING: Homeless Children's Education Fund
It is estimated that there are over 9,000 homeless children in Pennsylvania. Many of them fall behind in school, find it hard to adjust to new surroundings, and often can’t catch up with new peers every time they are forced to move. 60% of homeless children drop out altogether. Homeless Children’s Education Fund is fighting to change the lives of Allegheny County children who have been affected by homelessness. They offer inspiring after-school and summer programs for the area children, along with well-equipped Learning Centers for homeless children to have access to learning materials. But most importantly, they offer homeless children “hope through learning.” It costs $37K to support a homeless child a year in PA, and only $6.4K per homed child. The costs of homeless to the society are enormous, and HCEF wants to change that, along with offering a bright future to these children.
