THE STORY:

Historical Background The Young Astronauts Program (YAP) of Metropolitan Columbus is an educational program that focuses on the teaching of math and science to middle school youth through aviation-based activities. The program is designed to elevate the interest and skills of gifted and talented students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and career preparation, including urban and underserved populations. Lessons include theory-based instruction balanced with hands-on activities teaching math and science principles, team-building, leadership, problem solving, critical thinking and analysis. Through these extra-curricular enrichment experiences, students also learn about aerospace and careers in the aerospace industry. Program Activities Over our years of service, the activities that we use have included the following: Monthly lessons conducted by corporate pilots, flight line and military aviation officers, and subject matter experts from areas such as rocketry and meteorology. Theory-based instruction balanced with hands-on activities in the four forces of flight, flight controls and aerodynamics, rockets, helicopter and rotary crafts, robotics, and hovercrafts. Group activities: Making, testing, and flying various types of paper airplanes and gliders; Flying an airplane using aviation simulation software; Constructing and testing model rockets; Flying R.C. helicopters; Constructing and operating Mindstorm Lego robots; Constructing and operating tabletop hovercrafts Field trips to the Challenger Space Learning Center (Dayton, OH), NASA Glenn Research Center’s Young Astronauts Day (Cleveland, OH), the Air Force Museum (Dayton, OH), and Space Camp (Huntsville, AL). Funding will contribute to program expenses to teach STEM to participants in sessions during the school year. New Opportunity Your support will also help us launch a new project providing a new aerospace patch/badge through a partnership with the Girl Scouts Council. YAP is the first organization to assist the Girl Scouts in the development of this first patch/badge. Other Ways You Can Help Thank you for taking the time to review our ongoing campaign to educate our youth in STEM through aerospace-based activities. Any help to spread the word about our program would be greatly appreciated! Please share this campaign with your friends and colleagues through social media and other opportunities.
