Diversity Youth Theater needs your help to cover the travel expenses for 10 high school and college age students that are participating in the second year of the innovative program titled, Young Urban Artist Retreat.
MISSION OF THE YOUNG URBAN ARTISTS RETREAT
Young Urban Artists from the city of Newark and the neighboring communities, will have a unique opportunity to take a road trip beyond the landscape of their city, to a rustic camp in Northern Michigan. While at Lookout Camp, their lives will certainly change, as they experience communal living in a natural environment, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of urban life and take the time to value their connectivity with nature. Ultimately, as the next generation of artistic creators, Diversity Youth Theater hopes to expose them to an setting that will further enhance their innate creative voices.
Through the longstanding relationship and generous support of Lookout Camp in Michigan, the retreat will be housed at this wonderful camp facility. Diversity Youth Theater is beyond grateful for this opportunity to expose young artists to the beauty of Lookout Camp and Lake Michigan. But... we need your help to get them to the site. EVERY DONATION MATTERS.

The Motivation of Young Urban Artists Retreat:
Originally from the urban community of Detroit, Michigan; the life path of Kathy D. Harrison; The Founder of Diversity Youth Theater and Young Urban Artist Retreat, was tremendously impacted as a high school student when she was selected to participate in the High Scope Camp program held in Clinton, MI. It was there that she first experienced living in a rural setting and life away from the city of Detroit. The environment of the woods, streams, the clear view of the stars at night, inspired many writings and songs that led to creative works.
During her undergraduate years in college, Kathy worked at Crystalaire Camp and Lookout Camp for several years during her summer breaks. The summers spent in Northern Michigan had such a profound impact on her self development and artistic development. She was challenged to push past her self imposed boundaries, due to unfamiliarity with a notion or an idea. She stepped out of her comfort zones and hiked, camped overnight, slept on the beach, cooked over open flames...all the while being creatively inspired to write music and lyrics that would not have come to life, if not for the environment of nature.
Kathy identifies with urban youth that have not had the chance to go to a camp environment. She recognizes that they aren't afforded the opportunity to travel beyond the neighborhood. And while the city certainly brings out creativity in artists, what will they create or write or hum or sing, when they are surrounded by the woods, or lay on a non-commercialized beach?
Through this innovative program, Young Urban Artists Retreat; Kathy is hoping to share the love of camp, while encouraging future artists to create works that are inspired when immersed in natural environments.
Please support this effort.
