THE STORY:

I need your help so together we can help the students at St. Frumentius Theological College in Gambella, Ethiopia. Many of you may know Bishop Grant LeMarquand and the work he and the Rev. Johann Vanderbijl are doing in this remote area of Ethiopia. Surrounded on three sides by Sudan, and recently inundated by more that 300,000 refugees, Bishop Grant and Johann are hard at work teaching others how to spread the Gospel. It's especially hard work because while people know and love Jesus, discipleship is another matter. There is an urgent need for theological training in the region of Gambella, in the west of Ethiopia. There are 80 Anglican Churches in Gambella, which are part of the Episcopal / Anglican Diocese of Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa. These churches are served by 15 clergy; none has a theological degree. There are no other theological colleges in Gambella. But, before St. Frumentius can train theologically, it has to teach English ... and that's where I need your help. Just two weeks ago I received an urgent email from Johann, asking if I could possibly spend July in Gambella, teaching English to potential students at the college. Only those who can pass a basic English course are admitted to the College. English is rarely spoken in this part of Ethiopia -- and, because there are so many different languages spoken among the residents, it is necessary to teach in one language. English is the language of choice for the Anglican Church and for St. Frumentius Theological College. I'm eager and ready to go, but round-trip transportation costs about $2,000. The College has no funds available to pay for my transportation. This is a volunteer project for me; I will receive no salary for my four weeks of teaching. Johann and his wife, Louise, will feed and house me, but flying to Gambella is expensive. Without your help, I won't be able to go ... and no English will be taught in Gambella this summer. Please help me help the students learn English, so they can be trained to share the Gospel. Any gift you can give will be thankfully received. Please be generous!
