Youth About Business (YAB) provides a national leadership development training program for youth. The YAB programs focus on college-readiness and career-preparedness. High school students from diverse backgrounds are rarely given the opportunity to learn about and pursue a career in business. In addition, companies struggle to build healthy pipelines of talent who can transition seamlessly from student to corporate culture with a deep understanding of business and finance.
Youth About Business (YAB) was founded as a project of Creating an Environment of Success (CES), a Tennessee-based 501(c) 3 not-for-profit corporation in 1992. Program founder, Sam Kirk, decided to utilize his 17 years of experience in the corporate world in order to develop this leadership training program to cultivate skills in young people to increase their options in business and industry.
The YAB Entrepreneurial Training Program is a program where students are taught the mechanics of how to successfully run a business. The program gives students a theoretical view of business through our established curriculum. Students then have the opportunity to apply the knowledge by actually participating in the management of small business operatives that we refer to as our Training Centers. We will launch our online training of this model in 2014 so that students nationally and globally can access the rigorous curriculum.
Since the founding of Youth About Business, more than 7,000 students have participated in one or more of its educational components. The organization's student participants are proud to have a 98% high school graduation rate.
Our 2012 college graduates secured jobs with companies like Goldman Sachs, Accenture, McKinsey & Company, Skanska, Ernst & Young and Walmart just to name a few. Our goal is to continue to expand our training program so that we might create a larger pool of talent for the work force in addition to creating more job opportunities in our business training centers.
The program is designed to continue learning business throughout the year. The students maintain the operations of several training centers at the national headquarters located in Nashville Tennessee. The most recent endeavor is the Manna From Heaven Dinner House that is an event venue, where YAB participants became involved from its inception in carrying out the planning, development, opening and the ongoing process of scheduling activities and other tasks.
In this training center, our participants are being taught event management, promotion, marketing, finance, strategic planning and customer service. The center is about 75% complete. Once complete, we will be able to attract many additional events such as music showcases, weddings, conferences, and concerts (remember we are in Music City).
