THE STORY:

The Moral of the Story is a fully inclusive performing arts summer camp located in Norcross, Georgia. Each summer we choose a classic piece of literature and rewrite it based on the struggles and challenges our campers face in their day-to-day lives. Campers learn scriptwriting, choreography, music, dance and team-building skills. We always have special (sometimes FAMOUS!) guests, who come and share their experiences with the campers, perform and participate! The camp also provides breakfast, lunch and two snacks to all who participate, along with before and after care, for parents' convenience.

The Melanie Thornton Youth Arts Foundation, a duly registered 501(c)3 non-profit, sponsors this fun and progressive six-week day camp. We practice a policy of full inclusiveness, embracing the wonderful differences our Special Needs and Hearing-Impaired campers bring to us. Our special campers teach our typical campers tolerance and understanding, and our typical campers assist our special campers with extra help, mentoring and lots of love!

Special Needs Children between the ages of 8-20 are eligible, with the only stipulations being that they can self-feed and self-toilet. Our children participate fully in all aspects of the camp-rewriting the story, set construction, costume design, choreography, acting, dancing and singing, and a Field Trip Fridays! Our Special Needs Facilitator is American Sign Language fluent and has worked with Special Needs and Hearing-Impaired children on a daily basis for the last seven years. We provide whatever our special students need, whether it be a special diet, an individual mentor, adaptive equipment, or whatever!

This summer we hope to sponsor more Special Needs and Hearing-Impaired campers than ever before, so we need your help! We need to raise at least $35,000 to provide this wonderful camping experience to a new group of campers! The funds will cover camp fees, special adaptove equipment, our special needs facilitator, individual mentors, a teen counselor and transportation to and from camp for our Special Campers, as well as a special trip to New York to see a real Broadway Show! Any extra funds we raise will be used towards parents accompanying their campers on this once-in-a-lifetime trip! All contributions are tax-deductible.

The Melanie Thornton Youth Arts Foundation works with children diagnosed with Autism/PPD, Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Cognitive Disorders, Physical Disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and many other challenges. Our camp is housed within a school, so all aspects of our campers' needs can be met without delay. Each child's parents complete a Camper Needs Profile, which identifies what their child requires from our staff to make sure that the child experiences a fun, fulfilling and memorable camp experience!

PLEASE HURRY, as funds must be raised by May 10, 2014 for this year's session, which runs from June 2 - July 11, with our big stage performance in a real theatre on July 12! We want to be able to notify parents of their scholarships as soon as possible! We would LOVE to send you video of our performance, too, so you can be as proud as we always are!
