BENEFITING: PHILADELPHIA YOUTH FOR CHANGE
WHAT YOUTHBUILD DOES:
YouthBuild (http://www.youthbuildphilly.org) provides out-of-school youth in Philadelphia with the broadest range of tools, supports and opportunities available to become self-sufficient, responsible and productive citizens in their community. Our one-year program gives high school dropouts a second chance to earn their diplomas while developing vital job skills through rigorous academics, vocational training and community service.
WHAT STUDENTS GET:
Our rigorous curriculum combines an intensive academic course load with hands-on vocational skills training. The program culminates in both a high school diploma and an industry-recognized certification in a high demand occupation, such as construction, information technology, or healthcare.
AND IT WORKS:
YouthBuild has incredible success relative to other programs of its kind.
• The last three years boast a 71% graduation rate (Philadelphia across the board is 63%)
• More than 1500 young adults have completed the program since 1992
• Our graduates have consistently moved on to successful lives; Within 12 months of completion, 2009 graduates:
o Enrolled in college or other post-secondary education (25%)
o Secured and maintained full-time employment (25%)
o Attended post-secondary school and maintained part-time employment (31%)
WHERE THIS MONEY GOES:
Help me make a difference in the lives of a YouthBuild Graduate.
As more and more of our graduates become first generation college students, we've found that they struggle to see this opportunity through to a degree. Our young people lack the resources - both financial and emotional - to be independent college students. Although they receive financial aid and an AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for school, the basic costs of living are oftentimes too much to bear, especially when the student is a single parent responsible for all the expenses of raising a child. In addition, they lack the family and community support they have come to rely on as YouthBuild students. We recognize the need to continue a level of support while encouraging independence and self-sufficiency.
To address this need, we have developed the "YouthBuild Futures" project to support our students as they transition to post-secondary education.
Every $1000 to support this project would allow us to fully support one college-bound student during this time of transition by providing:
• Netbook computer upon enrollment
• Books and school supplies at the start of each session
• Ongoing need-based grants to cover living expenses, including housing, food, childcare, and medical expenses
• Monthly study skill and personal development trainings
PS. YouthBuild's ability to change lives is truly inspirational, and seeing it up close is a wonderful experience. If you'd like to visit YouthBuild next time you're in Philadelphia, or participate as a volunteer or YoungFriend, please contact me.
