Youth Empowerment Symposium & Know Your Rights Presentation
Organized by: Demetrius Shelton
EVENT DATE Oct 11, 2014
The symposium will provide an analysis of the National Bar Association’s publication “How the LawTreats You Differently When You Turn 18.” The publication is designed to inform young people about their rights and responsibilities once they reach the age of 18 and provides a brief summary on topics such as civic responsibilities (i.e. voting, jury duty), contracts (i.e. credit, purchasing automobiles, renting apartments, etc.), and criminal responsibility.
The symposium will also focus on current legal issues by engaging the students in mini and mock trials to assist them in defining justice. In the wake of the Michael Brown Shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, the symposium will lead with a “Know Your Rights" presentation by national experts focusing on interacting with law enforcement officials.
The fundraiser is to raise money to cover the cost of print materials, breakfast and lunch, and transportation to the event.
