Support our Youth Cohorts!
Youth Hub is multiplying our Youth Cohorts in 2016 to equip 50 local youth for employment success! Youth Cohorts are small groups of youth from Codman Square, Dorchester who meet twice a week for 12 weeks to improve their skills, explore possible jobs and careers, build support networks, and pursue their employment related goals. In spring 2015, we launched our first Youth Cohort, and it was wildly successful with a 100% employment rate amongst graduates! Not only that, but several of the Cohort participants stepped up as leaders to help other youth in the community succeed. In 2016, we are building upon this success, and expanding from 1 Cohort to 5! That's 50 youth who will be equipped, supported, and empowered for success in employment now and in the future!
Why Youth Cohorts?
At Youth Hub we believe that every youth in Codman Square (and beyond!) who wants a job, should have a job. That's because we know that employment as a teen and young adult is often critical for youth in our community to succeed as grown adults. Employment amongst low-income and youth of color has been linked with lots of other outcomes - like higher educational attainment, better health, lower risk of incarceration, and higher overall lifetime earnings. And although 90% of local youth say they want or need a job, on average only 25% are employed. And nearly 75% of youth say that they have never had any kind of job-readiness training or support. So, Youth Hub staff, partners, and our team of local Youth Leaders has set out to change this with our Youth Cohorts!
Where will the money go?
Youth Hub is seeking to raise $15,000 to go directly to the Youth Cohort participants! Participants receive a $300 stipend for completing Cohort trainings and attaining certain goals. We have found that this stipend is important to help alleviate the financial pressure youth often feel to make money, so that they can fully focus on their personal and professional development for the 12 weeks of the program So, to break it down... $300 x 50 youth = $15,000 for youth stipends.
Who is Youth Hub?
Youth Hub is a collaborative, neighborhood-based initiative working to dramatically improve youth employment and career-readiness amongst youth in Codman Square, Dorchester and beyond. Youth Hub applies a measurement-based and innovation-driven approach to improve population outcomes in targeted neighborhoods, while building local leadership and capacity for sustained change. Youth Hub cultivates and equips neighborhood-based Youth Leadership Coalitions to use innovative technology and methods to collect data related to youth career-readiness locally, set and measure goals to improve outcomes (such as increasing summer employment), and engage the community and stakeholders in applying new solutions (like the Youth Cohorts) for better results!
