My name is Lynn Cannon and I am the Executive Director of Youth Visions, Inc. I'm an ARMY Vet and a mother of two strong handsome young men. I have been with Youth Visions, Inc. for nearly 5 years, and I would have to say this is the most challenging job I have ever had. Yes, even compared to the ARMY...hands down, hardest job ever.
Good days in this line of work with children and youths who have been victimized by abuse, neglect and even sexual assault is very few and far between. Best way I can explain it is...out of 365 days in a year, we might have 2 or 3 goods days. Those are the days when children are reunited with their parents after they have completed 2 years of drug rehabilitation and we are able to help families come back together. Other times, children and/or youths are adopted by foster parents the children and/or youths lived with for 2 years or more and have approved their own placement. (We never approve adoption if it's not what the child wants.)
People forget that children and youths have a voice too, and their small voices need to be heard. We, here at Youth Visions, Inc., are that childs voice in the court room. Their wishes are made known in the court. We are the strongest advocates for them. Too often the courts and attorneys focus too much on the parents and how they're treatments are going, or are they complying with their court orderd rehabilitations? They forget to ask about the child. They want to drag out proceedings. We force them to act now. While their parents are being treated, the child is still growing. Ever changing physically and mentally without their parents. They still attend school, and still need care, support and love. We say "NO" to the courts when they ask for more time, another chance to check themselves into court ordered facilities for treatment, because it's not far to make the child wait. Wait for you to get your priorities in order, and put them first!
At Youth Visions, Inc. we strive every day to make they're lives as normal as possible. We provide Christmas presents, winter coats, school supplies all year as needed, blankets and suitcases for each child and youth. Even teddy bears to help them feel safe and secure. Most children and youths who have been neglected and/or abused never had such luxuries we take for granted, such as a special blanket or teddy bear to cuddle at night. Most don't have but a couple, and I mean a couple, articles of clothing. Imagine being 5 years old and placed in a strange home with people you don't know. How does that child close his or her eyes at night and feel safe the first while they are in that home?
So, what are we asking for? Youth Visions, Inc. is a non-profit organization, and we mostly operate on fundraising. $100,000.00 is just enough to sustain us for one year. So please donate today. Help us change a child or youths life for the better.
