YWCA of Northeast Kansas is partnering with The AllState Foundation Purple Purse campaign to bring awareness to domestic violence and how financial empowerment can help many women leave.
When asked why we do what we do, we answer with a story.
“Jessica” (not her real name) and her three children came into our shelter with nothing but a protection order against her husband. They had no transportation, nowhere to go, and the eldest child had just had surgery to put pins in a broken leg.
She and her children stayed in our emergency shelter for three-and-a-half months. During their time at Shelter, her abuser was arrested and spent time in jail. We helped her set up services with Kansas Legal Services to start divorce proceedings and set up custody and visitation. We nominated her for a program through Washburn Tech, and she was selected as a recipient of a free car. We helped her connect with an agency that worked with her to find affordable housing in the rural community she was originally from so she and her children would have the support of friends and family.
When she left Shelter, she had everything in place that she needed to make a new start. She and her children moved into their new home the day before Christmas.
