BENEFITING: YWCA OF EASTERN UNION COUNTY
Mary endured long-term physical, emotional, and financial abuse during her marriage. Even following their separation and divorce, Mary’s ex-husband continued to financially abuse her by withholding child support in order to force her to quit school. In April 2017, Mary began sessions with the YWCA Union County’s STEP Job Specialist. Within her first session, Mary set three important career and financial goals for herself to gain permanent independence from her abuser.
1) Finding fulltime employment:
With the Job Specialist’s assistance, Mary was able to find a job listing for a Customer Service Position with a health care diagnostics company. Through Individual coaching sessions, the Job Specialist assisted Mary with the extensive application process and prepared her for the interview. At the STEP Computer Labs, Mary was able to improve her resume with the help of a STEP Volunteer and apply for the position in a safe environment. She utilized the STEP Clothing Closet to have interview appropriate attire. Mary is now a proud employee of the health care diagnostics company and hopes to advance after she earns her Master’s Degree.
2) Applying for a scholarship to complete graduate school:
The Job Specialist referred Mary to a scholarship program for assistance. Mary received a $1,000 scholar to continue her education. Mary will complete graduate school this spring with a degree in Biology.
3) Building her credit score:
Lastly, through workshops using the Allstate Financial Curriculum, Mary learned more about how credit scores are determined and how to build her credit score. She was referred to The Independence Project, which is a NNEDV credit building program implemented through micro-lending. Mary is currently building her credit score in hopes of becoming a homeowner.
