BENEFITING: YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago
Although Mother's Day has passed, we need to continue supporting mothers like Sana. Sana joined YWCA Metropolitan Chicago’s Young Parents Program at the age of 16 after having her son, Kevin. With the help of the YWCA, Sana received critical parenting education and personalized home visits that built her skills and confidence related to being a mother, and ensured Kevin’s healthy development.
Sana gained strength and support from YWCA staff as well as her peers, something she describes as instrumental in helping her get through the more difficult days. Sana was able to balance the constant demands of school and parenthood, and went on to graduate and enroll in college.
Sana is now 20 and graduating from UIC this Mother’s Day weekend with a bachelor’s degree in political science! Sana plans to pursue law school or a PhD program. Her son Kevin is a healthy, active and smart four-year-old who is already learning from his mother that he can in fact accomplish all of his dreams.
Unfortunately, due to anticipated state budget cuts, the YWCA’s Young Parents Program is in jeopardy. This program has been serving young mothers on Chicago’s South Side for more than 40 years, creating multigenerational impact related to health, education and conomic empowerment.
You can help sustain the Young Parents Program and ensure mothers like Sana get the support they need by making a gift today.
