For the past few months, I have been serving as Treasurer on the Board of the Brooklyn YWCA. The Brooklyn YWCA is a 300 unit affordable housing building in downtown Brooklyn. Residents of the building are all women, the majority of which are survivors of gender-based violence, most are working poor, many are formerly homeless, and about a third are seniors. The YWCA provides social services and programming for its residents, as well as the community at large in its 30,000 sq. ft. of non-profit offices and community space. The Brooklyn YWCA is a "pay to play" organization, and they require that elected Board Members pay $2,500 to join the Board. I know that it may sound backwards to pay a fee to volunteer time, but as those of us in the non-profit world know, unrestricted funds are gold, especially in a social service organization. YWCA uses the unrestricted funds from newly-elected Board Members to pay for non-programmatic expenses that cannot be covered from the rental income of the building. So friends, I am asking you to help me by contributing as little or as much as you can. I am planning to personally match whatever I raise, and hopefully with your help I can get to my goal. The organization is amazing and I am looking forward to contributing to their strategic plan. Thank you so much for reading this and contributing to the cause!
