THE STORY:

YWCA OF EASTERN UNION COUNTY wrote -

Megan experienced physical, emotional and financial abuse during her marriage.  Because of the financial abuse, she had no income and few marketable job skills.  She began working with a counselor at the YWCA Union County and was referred to our Skills, Training and Empowerment Program (STEP) – a workforce development program designed for victims of domestic violence.  She began working as a housekeeper, but dreamed of starting her own catering business. Her cooking abilities were excellent, but she lacked financial knowledge and computer skills.  This make it almost impossible to use her talents to start a business and become financial independent.

Through STEP, Megan learned about financial planning, managing a budget, and understanding her credit report. She also received tuition support through STEP to take a computer basics certification course.  Through this course, Megan gained the skills needed to create advertising materials to market her new catering business. In addition, with the help of STEP, Megan completed a 12-week small business certification program.

Today, Megan is running her own catering business and making enough income to support herself and is free of her abuser.  “I never dreamed I could do this, but now I am dreaming all of the time.”

Help us fill the Purple Purse so we can help more women like Megan become empowered and independent.  Here is what your support can do:
