Young Women Empowered (Y-WE)
September 29, 2016

Hi Friends and Family!  As you know, for many years I have been committed to helping women through mentoring, volunteering, etc.  I have been  See more

THE STORY:

YOUNG WOMEN EMPOWERED wrote -

With your help we can raise $5,000 in scholarships through crowdrise so that young women from low-income families can participate in our school-year programs this fall. When you invest in Y-WE programming you are creating a safe space where girls of all backgrounds belong. You are taking a stand against the bullying and harassment of young women whose races, religions, nationalities, sexual orientations, and gender identities are often the targets of verbal, emotional, and physical violence. With your support of young women leaders who are committed to a compassionate and just world, you are lifting up Y-WE’s transformative community, and taking your place in it. Please make a contribution to this #YWEBelong Campaign so that we can continue to create diverse community of belonging for young women leaders.

97% of Y-WE participants say what they value most about our programs is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with people from different backgrounds. We all need messages of inclusiveness, justice, love and belonging. We need young leaders who know they can make social change by working together and learning from one another.

When you make a gift to Y-WE’s scholarship fund, you are making an enduring investment in diverse communities of belonging.  Our goal is to raise $30,000 to expand our services and offer 30 full scholarships for our school-year programs this fall.

Your support creates pathways for young women like Zoya, who is a passionate 2nd generation Iranian woman with a dream “to become an advocate for the immigrant community as a politician.” She says, “Y-WE taught me how to reach for my dreams and because of that empowerment, I had the courage to ask to be an intern for Pramila Jayapal.” Zoya spent her summer advocating for immigrant rights and canvassing for Miss Jayapal’s congressional campaign.

Your commitment creates pathways for young women like Aisha who struggled to find her voice amidst the Islamophobia she confronts as a Muslim American. She says, “Before Y-WE I didn’t know what empowerment meant. Now I have more role models than I can count and I know empowerment means to plant my feet, speak my truth, and advocate for myself and my community.” Aisha uses her strong voice as a journalist and emcee. She analyzes news sources and writes articles about the violent Muslims face and how they can receive help.

Your generosity creates pathways for young women like Bianca who is excited Y-WE’s office has moved to El Centro de la Raza. Now she will be able to participate in our new ACE (Academic and Career Explorations) program, which offers after school home-work help, college prep, and career support. Bianca is using her leadership to raise awareness about affordable housing and diabetes in her community. As a Mexican American one of her dreams is to become an immigration lawyer. Growing up, she was scared her family would be separated so she wants to work to help represent immigrants and keep families together.

Your caring creates pathways for young women like Adiza, a Y-WE alumna and recent Pomona College graduate, who has returned to Y-WE as an AmeriCorps member. She says, “Y-WE has given me so much—mentorship, career development, and a community of diverse women and girls who have always valued my voice. I want to pay this experience forward to other young women—especially young women of the African Diaspora—whose lives, stories, and leadership must be supported at this critical moment in history.”

Please make a gift of any size today. The first $10,000 in donations will be generously matched by the Chin Family Foundation thanks to board member Candace Chin!

Your donation will directly help to create a better world. Thank YOU for belonging to this community!
