My name is Zach Alderman, and I'm a junior at the University of Iowa, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I also hold a leadership position as an officer for Phi Gamma Delta on campus. As an engineering student I am focusing on energy and environmental systems design, and I have a particular interest in sustainable system design for the developing world.
Outside of school I love to donate my time to help others, and I view this trip with Peak 4 Poverty as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put my my academic and service goals into practice. I plan to do a senior design project next fall to develop a sustainable energy system for developing communities, and to have the opportunity to travel and meet the people I want to help, and work with them on a day to day basis to see what resources they have, and what their core needs are is invaluable.
More importantly, the ability to develop very close personal relationships with people gives you a much stronger motivation to continue to support them in the future, and to stay focused on serving others, even when other challenges pop up in your own life. I am also a huge fan of the outdoors and an avid hiker. I look forward to the challenge of sumitting Kili, and hope to further develop my leadership skills by assisting our team to the top (and back!), and doing all I can to make it a great trip for everyone!!
