THE STORY:

On March 12, 2016, five firefighters from the Chirundu, Zambia fire brigade were killed and two others were seriously injured when their truck crashed while responding to another serious motor vehicle crash. Prior to the crash, the Chirundu fire brigade had only one truck and 13 firefighters, so this crash is even more devastating. I met some of the Chirundu firefighters (as well as over 150 from other areas) while teaching a fire service seminar in Zambia in October 2015. The firefighters in Zambia are a very dedicated group who do a lot with a little, and for relatively little money. Since there is no program in Zambia to assist the families of fallen firefighters, I am trying to raise funds to help support the families during the difficult months ahead. The men killed leave 8 children behind. The average monthly salary of a firefighter in Zambia is only about $300, so a little bit of money can go a long way in supporting the families of our fallen and injured brothers. The plan is to send some money each month to the families for as long as funds are available. All the money raised (except for the cost of transferring the money to Zambia) will go directly to support the families.
