BENEFITING: PHILANTHROPIC VENTURES FOUNDATION
Update: Our match challenge has been met! We turned $5,000 into $10,000 with your help and the help of a very generous donor! We now have enough to buy a truck and repair supplies, but we'd like to keep going and see if we can get enough money to buy a motorbike for the project. Thanks for your generosity!
As a doctoral student at Montana State University, I’ve been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to work with the Zambian Carnivore Programme on its mission is to restore large mammal populations. To read more about the Zambian Carnivore Programme click here. Zambia is home to all of Africa’s iconic animals, including elephants, wildebeest, zebra, lions, African wild dog, cheetah and hyena. But with all this biodiversity and beauty, comes vulnerability to the impacts of illegal poaching and unsustainable land use.
The Zambian Carnivore Programme has many tools to address such threats. First and foremost, they rely on science-based research to direct conservation strategies, which is where I come in. I will be spending 9 months in Zambia’s Liuwa Plain National Park tracking wildebeest to understand what affects their survival and reproduction. This wildebeest population is recovering from decades of poaching and over harvesting, and their conservation is necessary to support the many plant communities and carnivore populations in the region.
To read more about my work in Zambia please see Montana State University's news story here.
Though we have the expertise to gather a lot of information for wildebeest conservation, there is a lot of work to do and money is tight. As most of the work requires moving around the greater Liuwa area to monitor animals and remove traps, the greatest need is transportation and field equipment.
So here’s what I’m asking… I am helping the Zambian Carnivore Programme raise $35,000 for vehicles and research equipment to support our work on wildebeest conservation, and we are nearly half way to our goal and I need your help to reach it. Though this site says we're benefiting Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, this organization sponsors the Zambian Carnivore Programme - so don't worry, all of your donations will go to the right place!
Thank you so much for considering a tax deductible donation as a gift to a friend or family member during this matching challenge. You can make a donation because you want to help ensure the survival of wild African animals or to help bolster Zambia’s wildlife ecotourism sector. Better yet, you could join the team and raise money on your own – it’s simple, easy and all contributions are tax deductible!
P.S. Any money raised above our goal will go toward other equipment costs necessary to run our research camp. After my work is completed, all vehicles and equipment will continue to be used by the Zambian Carnivore Programme to support their many conservation projects. And if you would prefer your donation remain anonymous, please indicate as much when you complete the online donation form. Thanks again for all of your support…
