The 10-second version: Zan and Doug Balcom are going to walk a marathon in July to raise money for cancer research & treatment, and we'd like your support.
The details: Zan and Doug Balcom are asking for your support to fight cancer.
We would like to honor our relatives & friends whose lives have been taken by cancer -- including Doug's mother (and Zan's grandmother) Dorothy Balcom, and her father W. Vernon Macneal. We'd also like to honor relatives & friends who have faced cancer and survived -- including Peggy Forster (mother of Zan's aunt Kate Ffolliott), as well as our friend Cindy Blair. We seek to honor all of these people, and the millions like them (including some of your own relatives and friends) who have faced cancer in their lifetimes, by pushing ourselves to achieve a difficult athletic challenge, while raising money for cancer research and treatment in the process.
The athletic challenge: Zan and Doug are going to walk a marathon (that's 26.22 miles). We've chosen the Missoula Marathon, on July 13, 2014 in Missoula, Montana -- one of the major annual marathons in the US that offer a long enough official time limit to cater to walking participants. We've been training for months, including walking a half-marathon in April in just over 3 hours. Our mission is to complete the Missoula Marathon in less than its 7.5-hour time limit (which is quite grueling for a 26-mile fast walk in hot weather); our personal goal is to complete it in substantially less than that, perhaps in as little as 6.5 hours.
The fundraiser: We estimate that between the two of us, we will be taking at least 90,000 steps to complete this marathon. So we've dubbed our personal fundraiser "90,000 Steps Against Cancer." We are asking for your support in raising money for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a consortium of the three top cancer research facilities in Seattle: Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, University of Washington Medical Center, and Seattle Children's Hospital. Our goal is to raise at least $1000 for SCCA.
Please use this web page to support our cause, and give what you can. You could symbolically honor Dorothy Balcom by giving $86, as she would be 86 years old now if cancer hadn't taken her in 1992. But any amount is appreciated, and will help tip the balance toward finding treatments and cures for the many cancers that continue to threaten your loved ones and ours.
Thanks in advance for your support,
--Zan and Doug Balcom
