Zary Hernández Colón relocated from Venezuela 20 years ago.
An active member of the American Translators Association, Zary is the Senior Linguist for Unum, where her primary responsibility is accurately translating insurance documents from English to Spanish. She supports Unum’s overall Hispanic Initiative and assists the Company in providing enhanced customer service to Spanish-speaking customers. Zary led the translation of the Unum marketing portfolio into Spanish and the creation of the Bilingual Corporate Database currently utilized across the company. She has established successful relationships with foreign and US translation firms; pioneered the Unum Bilingual Network across campuses, and created a peer professional development program. She is a gifted networker, with the ability to liaise within her workplace and outside of it, building a sense of community and fostering a welcoming environment for all. She also assists newcomers in relocating to Chattanooga, and recruits and trains volunteers to provide translation and interpretation services at parent-teacher conferences in Hamilton County Schools. She is the 2014-2015 Latino Leader of the Year (La Paz), Unum’s 2013 Voice of the Volunteer, 2013 Cultural Ambassador and International Achiever (the City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County and Chattanooga State Community College); and a 2012 Aspire (Unum employee recognition program) winner. She holds a B.A. in Spanish from Southern Adventist University and is about to earn her Master’s in Education, Secondary Education: Licensure in Spanish from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. As a community leader, she strives to inspire people to live a life of service and integrity.
