Zero to two
Organized by: Corie Lewis
Zero to two is exactly how it sounds. I have volunteered to adopt my niece and nephew because I love my family no matter what. Most of my family and friends have already been made aware of this possibility for some time now and it's happening. It's REALLY happening. I will be a single 29 year old female with two elementary school aged children. There, I said it! It's official! Now, as any new mom, I would need a baby shower of some sort to help out with this new transition and that is where each of you come in. I am asking for your help in the form of this "crowd rise" fundraiser which will serve as an alternative to a "baby shower". This is the easiest way I believe I could reach out to each of you. Those who may not know me as well should be aware that I am an independent, hard working, strong-willed, positive, healthy, active and caring individual. I generally enjoy helping others and have done so my entire life. I've always had difficulty asking for help for myself, but this time, I cannot give in to that weakness. I am asking for help so that I may be able to provide my niece and nephew with what they need to thrive and flourish in this crazy world that we live in. Two traumatized souls will now have a much greater chance at life all because people like me and you are here to show them that there are people who really do care. Thank you SO much for anything and everything you are able to assist in making this very important transition happen. I love you all and wish me luck! Xoxo
The plan: The state requires a home-study. This process has already begun, however, it cannot be completed until I have a larger apartment.
Most apartments in my area are rented out by rental agencies which generally charge a full months rental fee. Some are half fee, and very rarely, no fee. Most apartments also require first months rent and/or last months rent and/or security deposit. After that, I need to furnish their bedrooms. You can see how this will get expensive for me, and having to come up with this all at once is almost impossible in the short time I have to prepare. Also, I cannot depend on the state to help out.
My hopes are to have an apartment established by the end of this summer. The adoption process will take a bit longer than I thought, but my hopes are within the next few months. I am hoping my niece and nephew (new word I recently learned: "niblings" LOL) will be here once that finalizes. I will keep everyone posted as far as the aoption process time line.
My goal is to find an affordable apartment most likely in Arlington, MA, which is very close to my work place and has a great school system in place. This is important because as a single parent, I will need to be nearby in case of emergencies.

July 23rd 2014 Update:
I just signed a lease last night for a 4+ bedroom in Alrington, MA! Kids school is super close. My mother Tina and brother Michael will also be moving in with me to help with this big transition. The ICPC will be re-initiated and a rep will complete the home study once I move in August 1st. After that, it will be a matter of time before the kids can move in. This is perfect because they will have a couple weeks to transition before the school year begins September 2nd! I am SO excited! Deposit on apartment has been made and final amount will be given to my new landlord on August 1st. I thank you ALL for the support and donations you have made. I plan on keeping this fundraiser open until September 1st. I still need to prepare the kids for school supplies/new clothes/schoes etc. Depending on when they get here, I may even get them in a last minute summer program so they can have fun and just be kids before school starts.
I plan on moving everything between August 1st-15th, so if anyone wants to help out, let me know!
