BENEFITING: KWAZE-KWASA USA INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 30, 2013
Elections in 2008 were devastating for our local team. Zanu-PF (ruling party led by Mugabe) thugs demolished our base in the community Epworth Mission, Harare. One member of the team was tortured and murdered. Others were sexually and physically assaulted. All possessions were destroyed or plundered. Our local team leader went into voluntary exile in South Africa fearing for his life. Conditions in South Africa for Zimbabwean exiles has become hostile due to heightened xenophobia in the many lower economic areas. He returned to Zimbabwe for the current elections hoping for change and stood as a candidate in Mbare, Township. International observers report the election was fair. Many feel it was rigged without updated voter rolls. Instead of operating from exile again they have started to rebuild a local operation and need resources to expand their network providing much needed job opportunities in an economy that has >85% unemployment. Money raised will be used to secure a new safe base, procure communications, purchase materials and tools and assist as many as possible to make a living creating art and craft that will be sold to the developed nations via Kwaze-Kwasa [USA] Inc. registered US nonprofit.
Supporting traditional Zimbabwean art forms, like Shona stone carving, brings much needed income to the hardcore poor communities throughout this southern African nation. Zimbabwe, once one of the wealthiest African countries endowed with vast natural resources and agricultural land is now ranked the world's poorest country with an annual per capita income of $200. Encouraging an international market for fair trade art and crafts exports enables those affected by the economy's collapse to support their families and communities through the work of their own hands.
