Take 20 seconds to read why you should donate to a fundraising half marathon I will be completing in honor of someone I have never met: Chris Deatherage (https://www.facebook.com/fightforchris). Chris is the son of a high school friend with whom I recently reconnected on Facebook. At the age of 20, Chris was in a motor vehicle accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. With the help of intensive physical therapy over the past two years, Chris has battled back from his injury, regaining partial mobility in his arms. The funds collected from this run will be used to support Chris’s next big hurdle; returning to college, and I will be matching every dollar donated.
So why have I decided to run for Chris? Over three years ago, I suffered a back injury that left me with chronic nerve pain in my right leg. I had been avidly running marathons at the time of the injury, and subsequently have tried to return to running with the aid of spinal injections, physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic message, etc. Nothing helped to reduce the pain, which would flare up after running less than a mile. With no hope in sight, last fall I ceremoniously donated my running shoes to Goodwill and gave up on my dream of returning to racing.
A few months later, I learned about Chris’s amazing courage and tenacity coming back from his injury. Inspired by his story, I decided to give distance running one more shot, aided by a medication designed to relieve diabetic nerve pain. The Zion Half Marathon will be my first race since the injury. I am running it in honor of Chris because he inspired me to continue fighting in order to get this piece of my life back. In return, it is my hope that your donations will help provide him with the financial support and inspiration he needs to finish college. Any contribution you can make toward this goal is deeply appreciated! Dustin Pardini
