To my Zoom teammates and extended Zoom family,
We all have days in our lives that change us. December 19, 2014, was one of those for me.
My friend, Aaron Meyer, who has worked with me for a number of years, phoned me from Blank Children's Hospital to tell me that his two-year old daughter, Macy, had just been diagnosed with Leukemia. Another dear friend, Rebecca Moomey, lost her 9-year old daughter, Erin, to the same disease a year or so previously. Wanting to do something - anything to help, I dedicated my 2015 Ironman Arizona effort to the memory of Erin and to Macy's battle, raising money for the Blank Children's Foundation Center for Blood Disorder. Humbled beyond description, it was clear to me that if a two-year old can have a port in her chest for chemotherapy and withstand pain she doesn't even recognize, and her parents can stand it - then my days of complaining about sore legs after a long bike ride were in the rear view mirror.
The initiative was successful and as I delivered my contribution, I was again reminded of how fortunate we all are to have the health and opportunity to do so many things that we take for granted.
Macy is still fighting. Her photo and her parent's story is attached. I want to do more, and when I approached Matt with my idea, he instantly supported it.
This year, I want to participate with my Zoom family to raise money for Blank Children's in honor of Macy and memory of Erin.
My company, On course Capital, has purchased a tree from Blank for the Festival of Trees for $5,000 and is giving it to Zoom. I want it decorated with OUR race, workout and other related swim, bike and run gear, bathing caps, wrist bands, bibs etc. from our races this year. For any "Zoomer" that is interested, my idea is to have all of us solicit a handful (big or small) of our friends and colleagues to support our team initiative and our Ironman efforts. If we all raise $250 to $500 each, we can make a real difference. We have arranged for anyone interested to have their own Crowd Rise page for fundraising efforts. The support is cumulative for our team goal of $30,000.
Anyone wishing to participate is welcome to assist in decorating the tree. Out top fundraisers will be invited to the Festival of Trees gala. We will also have a couple of other fun prizes for top fund raisers including an entry into a 70.3 race next season, and a complimentary training analysis. More information to follow.
If this is not for you, please take the time to take a quick peek at the short video, and at a minimum, call your mom and dad and tell them you love them, and give your kids a smile and a hug.
We are so fortunate to have this unique group to share our pursuits and lives with. Thank you all for taking the time to go through this. Thank you again to Matt and Kristin Zepeda for providing us all with the platform that brings us together.
See you all soon.
